Blue Sea Systems e-Series 11001 1/2/OFF marine battery selector switch with Alternator Field Disconnect (AFD) for use with inboard petrol and diesel engines. This switch has a 350A continuous current rating, a maximum cranking/starting rating of 1200A for 30 secs and a voltage rating of 48V DC, making it suitable for use with 12V, 24V & 36V systems. The 1/2/OFF battery selection configuration allows switching between batteries (or banks of batteries) and it can be used to disconnect the batteries in emergencies or when the vessel is not in use.
This switch has an AFD facility to prevent damage to the diodes in an external alternator regulator in the event that the switch is turned OFF whilst the engine is running. The AFD is constructed in such a way that the AFD switch does not close until slightly after the main switch contacts have closed and it opens slightly before the main switch contacts open. This ensures that there will always be a path for the alternator’s output current when the alternator is producing power. The field disconnect will only work on alternators with an external regulator.
Alternatively, instead of protecting the diodes, the AFD can be used to indicate when the battery switch is in either of the two ON positions (1 or 2). The AFD terminals are connected whenever the switch is in either ON position, so various indicators, such as warning lights or alarms, can be connected to them which will be activated only when the battery switch is ON.
The e-Series range of battery switches are engineered for use in harsh marine environments in applications requiring high power output, high reliability, and low heat generation. The M10 (3/8″) tin-plated copper terminal studs provide maximum conductivity and corrosion resistance, and their 22mm length allows multiple cable terminals to be connected. The studs are a one-piece design, meaning they cannot work loose over time and the risk of over heating is reduced.
The ignition-protected case design is standardised across the range and has an IP66 waterproof rating, can accept cables up to 120mm² (4/0 AWG) in cross-section, and can be surface or rear panel mounted. The design of the actuating knob includes raised features that allow the position of the switch to be determined by feel – useful if operating in confined spaces.
